welcome...
The North Mississippi Education Consortium is a partnership between forty one North Mississippi public school districts, three community colleges, and the University of Mississippi School of Education. It's purpose is to provide a means whereby participating members can assure quality educational programs through cooperative efforts and shared resources, for the benefit of students and communities being served.

These efforts include: pooling local resources for special projects; professional development; sharing of expertise among members; identifying and securing revenues for cooperative projects, and exerting influence on state and national educational issues.

new workshops, news & updates

The North MS Education Consortium (NMEC) has been facilitating and conducting workshops for educators for several years now, and most of these training opportunities have been at no cost to participants.

Everyone understands that nothing is free, so if an educator attends a free training event then that means that some organization is funding the training. The NMEC is a non-profit, private organization that serves 41 school districts in north Mississippi. There are no local, state or federal funds provided to support the operation of a private organization. The NMEC is funded through membership dues, projects, grants and donations solicited by the staff of the NMEC. Since the economic downturn, most government agencies (including education) have lost a significant amount of their funding. School districts are forced to reduce expenditures for teacher travel and substitute pay. They also have lost funding for professional development.

At this time, the NMEC does not have a funding stream to pay for the conducting and facilitating of workshops. We have been waiting and hoping for some indication of funding for professional development, but none has emerged as of the end of July 2010. We have been notified that the MDE Race to the Top grant was not included in the next round for USDOE funding consideration.

However, the NMEC does plan to offer many workshops just as in the past for teachers and administrators, but there will need to be a per participant fee to offset the cost of providing this training. Hopefully, school districts can help with the fee, in some cases, by using federal program funds which have been designated for professional development activities. This schedule of training opportunities (2010/2011 Professional Development Offerings) will begin being posted the middle part of August. We are going to get through these economic times by working together.
